THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE Mountain Minorities A film directed and presented by Patrick Bernard Patrick Bernard, internationally renowned filmmaker and ethnographer, takes us deep into the remote mountains on the borders of southern China, Laos, Vietnam and Thailand. Here live fascinating peoples such as the Hmong-Miao, the Dong, the Bouyei and the Akha. Descendants of ancient migrations from the steppes of Siberia and Mongolia, these communities were gradually pushed towards the most isolated regions of Asia. In these mountainous territories, they have managed to preserve, to this day, a remarkable cultural identity made up of traditions, rituals and richly decorated costumes. The recent history of these peoples is also marked by exile. After the Indochina wars, from 1975 onwards, part of the Hmong population of Laos found refuge in France, French Guiana and the United States, forming a large diaspora. For more than forty years, Patrick Bernard has travelled throughout these regions. After his first journeys in the 1980s and 1990s, he returned in 2024 and 2025 to reconnect with these communities and document their evolution in a globalised China. This film offers a rare immersion into the heart of mountain cultures whose traditions remain vibrantly alive.
