Departing from the royal fountain at Saint-Nazaire, just a stone's throw from Fort Lupin, take a guided cruise on the River Charente as far as its mouth, between the Port-des-Barques and Fouras-les-Bains peninsulas and the unusual Île Madame. Then head out to sea to see the fortresses of the ocean - Fort Enet and the famous Fort Boyard - and stop off at Ile d'Aix, a remarkable site where time seems to have stood still.
