The West Indies
Flavors of the Caribbean
A film directed and presented by Claude Poret
Saint-Martin, Saint-Barthélemy, Guadeloupe, Martinique... so many names that evoke the sweetness of the islands, the flavor of rum and tropical fruits, the Creole accent and the infinite blue of the Caribbean sea.
This film takes us from island to island, highlighting the originality and richness of each one.
The first inhabitants of the West Indies were Indians from America. Since Christopher Columbus, many others have landed here, whether by force or by choice. With each port of call, the history of the West Indies takes shape, from the first Amerindian inhabitants, to the painful traces of slavery, to the contemporary diversity born of centuries of interbreeding. The memory is alive, carried by song, dance, the Creole language and everyday gestures.
A film that invites us to travel, but also to reflect on the identity of these overseas territories.
